Amy Harman
Bassoon
Described as a 'bassoonist in a million' (The Arts Desk) and as a musician of 'supreme eloquence' (The Times), Amy Harman is sought after as a soloist and chamber musician. In 2011 she was appointed Principal Bassoon of the Philharmonia Orchestra at the age of 23, and in 2014 was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT).
Born in London, she studied at the Royal College of Music with Andrea de Flammineis, Julie Price and Martin Gatt, and with František Herman at the Hudební Fakulta Akademie Múzických Umění in Prague.
Passionate about bringing the bassoon to a wider audience, in 2012 Amy appeared as a ‘flying soloist’ in Birmingham Opera Company’s premiere of Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht where she performed from a trapeze suspended above the audience. Recent highlights include performing Strauss’s Concertino with the English Chamber Orchestra and solo recitals at Wigmore Hall, Sage Gateshead, Colston Hall (Bristol), the Bath International, Lichfield and Devizes Festivals.
Sought after as a chamber musician, in 2015 Amy attended Open Chamber Music at IMS Prussia Cove collaborating with Elisabeth Leonskaja, and in 2016 toured California with Camerata Pacifica. She has taken part in festivals across Europe, including Pärnu, Tbilisi and Galway, collaborating with Aleksander Madzar, Nicholas Daniel, Radovan Vlatkovic, Natalia Gutman, Guy Johnston and the Chilingirian Quartet, among others.
Engagements this season include concertos with the Arch Sinfonia and Maidstone Symphony Orchestra. Amy returns to Wigmore Hall and the Tbilisi Festival and performs at the Mizmorim Festival in Basel, West Cork International Chamber Music Festival, Ryedale Festival and with Olivier Stankiewicz and Tom Poster in Brighton. She is a member of Ensemble 360 and appears as guest principal with leading orchestras throughout Europe including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Between 2010-2011 Amy was Principal Bassoon of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She is currently principal of the Aurora and English National Opera Orchestras, and has appeared as guest principal with the London Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestras, among many others. During her studies she trained with the European Union Youth and Britten Pears Orchestras.
Amy is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music.
