CCVG Symphonic Brass

Conductor - Matthew Thistlewood

Cardiff County & Vale of Glamorgan Brass is a symphonic brass ensemble made up of 12-18 year-old musicians.

Symphonic Brass performs music from across five centuries, and its programmes can include anything from renaissance polyphony, baroque masterpieces and brass band classics through to jazz standards and cutting-edge contemporary scores. Symphonic Brass has premiered a number of works by leading Welsh composers and will give the first performance of a new piece by Iain James Veitch at the Penarth Chamber Music Festival in June 2025.

Symphonic Brass’s exciting schedule includes engagements throughout the county and beyond. Its many tour destinations have included London, Birmingham, Manchester, York, Oxford, Scotland and Norway. Some engagements in 2025 include appearances at the Senedd, Newport, Salisbury and at Portsmouth Cathedral.

Over the years, many from the group have represented the country in National Youth Arts Wales ensembles and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. A significant number have gone on to study music at degree level and many are now members of professional orchestras and ensembles throughout the UK and abroad.
